The Man With The Child In His Eyes - UK 7" Single: Reissue

The reissue sleeve differs to the original release sleeve in very specific ways. Not only is it a cheap paper sleeve, but EMI decided to cut costs for the reissue sleeve by photocopying a first issue sleeve for it instead. It's a poor imitation, to be honest, and there are some key areas on the back of the sleeve that show this fact. The biggest giveaway are the folded edges along the sides. If you take a look at them, it almost appears as if each side has a double set of folded edges with one set of edges sticking out further than the other. When the original first issue sleeve was photocopied for the reissue, it also photocopied the original folded edges still in place, so when the new folded edges were cut and glued for the reissue, the original edge marks remained creating the illusion of a double set of folded edges.

A sad attempt has also been made to colour out the G&L letters on the reissue sleeve. If you look closely at the area, you will see that it's still faintly visible. I've also taken a blown up screen capture and circled the area in case it's difficult to see on the full scan.

Also, if you look at the bridge of Kate's nose on the reissue copy, you will clearly see a darkish rectangular shape. This is glue residue from a price sticker that was on a original first issue sleeve. So when it was photocopied it left this permanent mark, which can clearly be seen on every UK reissue for this single. The sleeve's opening has also been changed to a circular one.

The records and record labels on both the first issue and the reissue differ from one another. The record labels vary in colour slightly and also feature different typeset printing and positioning. The original release record has a punch-out centre, but the reissue has a solid centre. Also, there is no inscription on the run out vinyl on the A Side of the reissue.

The Man With The Child In His Eyes - UK 7" Single: First Issue

The original UK release of this single came in a thick card picture sleeve. The artwork on the sleeve is far superior to the reissue version. It's sharp, clear and bright. The back of the sleeve has the printed letters G&L along the bottom right-hand corner, with a rectangular type opening at the top with angled cuts at the sides.

First issue singles also have the inscription "The Child Hides In The Light" etched into the run off vinyl on Side A. The reissue does not have this inscription.

First issue releases of Wuthering Heights and The Man With The Child In His Eyes tend to be the hardest ones to track down these days.

The Man With The Child In His Eyes - Belgium 7" Single

The Belgium release features another very unique picture sleeve, with photography by Gered Mankowitz. Even though this one is a little harder to come by these days, it's not impossible - but it can prove to be a bit costly. I'm sure you can't tell by the scans, but the sleeve is actually textured. 

The back of the picture sleeve is exactly the same as the front, but the photo is actually upside down. I'm just keeping it right side up here to make things easier. I have absolutely no idea if this was done on purpose, or if it was just a printing error during the run of these sleeves. Either way, there it is.

The record labels are pretty similar to how the UK ones looked at that time. If you go looking for this one, make sure you pay attention to the record labels. I have heard from some people over the years who bought this one, only to have the Belgium record substituted for a UK release. The Belgium release will have a different catalogue number to the UK release, but it will also say "Made in Belgium" right on it. So always check what you're getting very carefully before you get it.

The Man With The Child In His Eyes - Holland 7" Single

The Holland release for this single uses the same artwork that's found on the UK version. However, this release has more of a brownish hue to the entire thing, almost giving it a kind of muddy look to its appearance. It's an interesting effect and a nice variant of the release.

The sleeve is also textured, sort of in the same way that the original UK picture sleeve of Hounds of Love is, but this sleeve is more paper-like. The back of the sleeve also features two solid brown vertical lines on either side, which aren't on the UK sleeve. There also isn't any distribution information listed on the back either.

The record has large centre holes, but the labels are reminiscent of the UK ones at that time. Apart from the catalogue number, there's also no distribution information on the labels either.

The Man With The Child In His Eyes - Polish 7" Single

The Polish 7" single for The Man With The Child In His Eyes features a unique picture cover. The photography is by Gered Mankowitz and the same photo has also been used for the Yugoslavian pressing of The Kick Inside.

The lettering style used on the Kick Inside LP has also been used on the front and back of this picture sleeve. It's also interesting to note the misspelling of 'Bush' twice on the back of the picture sleeve. Also, "The" seems to be missing from the song title - both on the sleeve and the record itself.

The Man With The Child In His Eyes ( The Whole Story)

The picture sleeve for the Canadian 7" release of The Man With The Child In His Eyes features a unique cover. It's also interesting because the photo used is a still for Experiment IV. It's also probably the most interesting Canadian picture sleeve release ever for a 7" single. Most Canadian releases were either issued in a very bland and boring picture sleeve, or issued in a generic company sleeve, which I think is even worse. I'm personally not a fan of releases issued in company sleeves, and I've tried to avoid those as often as possible. The other interesting thing about this cover are the multi-coloured vertical stripes. It's a bit reminiscent of the test pattern that was used back in the day when a television station went off the air for the night. I'm not sure if that was the intent here or not, but it sure looks like it.

The test pattern design continues on the back of the sleeve as well, and features a small photo of The Whole Story album artwork. This added photo can also be found on the back sleeve for the Canadian 7" single for Experiment IV. You may have noticed that the back of this sleeve has an extra stamp on it, which reads "Property of CBC Record Library, Toronto". The CBC is a television station in Toronto, Canada. I knew someone that worked there, and he sort of "borrowed" this for me back in the day.

The record labels are grey and feature large EMI America labels on both sides.
