Moments of Pleasure: The Best Works 1978 -1993 - Japanese Promotional CD Set

Even though this post has now been updated with all new scans, I have kept a couple of the photos that I originally posted here so that people could see how everything looks in the CD case.

This 2 CD promotional set was released in Japan back in 1993. Allegedly there were only 50 pressed copies of this set, but I have my doubts about that due to how often I see it turning up for sale. If there were only 50 copies in existence, you would rarely see this at all.

The thing about this is that there really isn't anything super special about it. Yes it's a promo, and a very difficult one to come by these days, but there really isn't anything particularly great about the song selections on either of the discs. I only picked it up at the time because it was a Japanese release and it was unique, but there really isn't anything on this thing that you can't easily find elsewhere. In fact, if you take a look at the track listing on the back of the CD case, you almost get the impression that someone randomly took chunks of albums and haphazardly slapped them onto these discs without much thought or consideration. Disc One contains nearly every track from The Red Shoes album. That may have been done to coincide with the release of The Red Shoes at that time, but some of those tracks can hardly be considered 'The Best Works'. And I won't even mention how better songs like 'Night of the Swallow' or 'Suspended in Gaffa' were overlooked completely for this compilation. I always thought the addition of the remixes was another stupid waste. I absolutely hate remixes of any kind. I don't mind the Hounds of Love era ones at all because they aren't typical remixes, but any remixes from The Red Shoes era were utter crap... and we all know it.

The CDs come inside a standard jewel case, which is fitted with a double-sided swing tray. The booklet cover features some nice artwork, which is a little reminiscent of The Red Shoes album design, including the same lettering. However, the front cover is the only area that features any sort of artwork at all. The eight page booklet has a sort of timeline on Kate, but all in Japanese text. The back of the booklet is fairly plain with only a Toshiba-EMI logo on it.

The CDs themselves are pretty basic and plain. One is a solid black colour, and the other is a solid red colour. The inside of the back insert also features Japanese text, but I have absolutely no clue what any of it says. Interestingly enough, or not, both sides of the CD spine are printed in English. Usually with Japanese CD releases one side will be printed in full English, but the other side will be in Japanese.

So what's my overall opinion on this? It's a fairly unexciting promo CD. When I got it back in the late '90s it was exciting enough, but only because it was something a little different. Eventually, this became another one of those items where I questioned even buying it to begin with. Apparently it's become quite rare through the years, highly sought after and fetches more money than it's worth. All I can say is... Skip it.

Lake Tahoe - 10" Vinyl Picture Disc

This special limited edition 10" picture disc release of Lake Tahoe was limited to 2,000 pressed copies only, and was a special release for Record Store Day April 21, 2012. Despite the fact that I had several people attempting to find this one for me, luck wasn't on our side that day.

The good news was that Kate's website announced they had 200 copies available on their site to buy at the regular sales price on May 9th. Anyone that tried to get one that day knows what a fun day it was trying to order from the site. The web traffic was so high that everyone's computer kept crashing, including mine.

Despite the crashing, the 200 copies sold out in about an hour. A lot of people never got one that day either. Everyone tried really hard, but it was a mad rush to the finish line. I know how difficult it was, so I really do empathize with anyone that tried and couldn't get through. It was not an easy task.

Personally, I do think it was much nicer getting it from Kate's shop, even with all the difficulty that day. Let's face it - Record Store Day was a complete disaster. We all know where a lot of these ended up, and even though I've been a hardcore fan for a lot of years, I had absolutely no intentions of paying the kind of money people were wanting from a certain online site. The whole thing made me sick.

I just want to give a shout out to Kelly R. and Kimberley P. who tried very hard for me on RSD to get one of these things. Special mention also goes to Mark M. who had his people looking for me as well. Thanks guys. I know RSD was a complete disaster and it's greatly appreciated that you all tried. Thank you!

I know Kate will never see this, but I'd like to thank her and her shop for putting some of these out so that REAL FANS had an opportunity to finally get one. Thank you!

Love and Anger - UK CD Single

The UK CD Single for Love and Anger is probably the hardest one from the Sensual World era to come by these days. There isn't really any specific reason for that - it just doesn't seem to turn up as often as the others, so you could be paying a bit of extra money for this one.

This came in a slim jewel case. The insert is folded, with a video still on the front and track/distribution information on the back. The inside of the insert is completely blank, which is the case with most of these CD singles.

The insert is printed onto a specific type of paper that doesn't do very well with fingerprints, so avoid touching it if you possibly can.

For some odd reason, scanning this CD has been the most problematic one I've had to deal with. No matter how many times I tried, it continually came out wonky - so it's for this reason I'm keeping one of my original photos in this post.

The gatefold 7" version of Love and Anger is the only UK release to feature extra photos from the video. You won't find them on this CD single release or any other UK release.

Lake Tahoe Single on Kate's Site

I hope everyone got an opportunity to order one of these from Kate's site today. There was only 200 available, and like a lot of other people out there, I also had a lot of fun trying to get one for myself - but I got through. According to my email, my order is being processed for shipping - fingers crossed on that. So when it does arrive, I will be adding it to my blog.

Congrats to anyone else out there that was successful enough to get one from Kate's site and avoided the scammers on eBay or other over inflated sites.

The Red Shoes - Canada Cassette Release

Canadian issue cassette for The Red Shoes came in a fully clear cassette case and features a full back insert. It's one of the few cassette releases where the full back artwork of the album is used on a cassette insert.

The most annoying thing about this release is the mile long insert/unfolding booklet. I have no idea if all releases were like this or not, but I tended not to unfold it at the time as it was nearly impossible to fold it back up the right way again. Despite that, the lyrics are printed on both sides of the insert, with a fruity sort of background. I scanned this in sections to make it all easier to see.

If you do bother to look at the insert, you will notice that some of the songs are printed in the wrong order towards the end. I have absolutely no idea if this was a printing error or purposely done for space reasons.

I remember being surprised at the time that this even got issued on cassette as cassettes were pretty much redundant at that time.

On Stage - First Issue Canada Cassette

This is the first Canadian issue of On Stage on cassette. It was later reissued with some alterations to the insert. Instead of me rambling them all out, you can check the reissue version right HERE.

The insert is double-sided, but the reversed side is just a long winded rant about cassette advice and other stuff.

There's one interesting thing about this release. If you take a look at the front of the insert it lists the first two tracks for the A Side and the second two tracks for the B Side. However, the cassette lists all four tracks on each side. I can confirm that all four tracks play on both sides.

There is also a slight difference in the catalogue number between the first and second issue releases.
